“To celebrate the liturgy without preparation is a violation of God’s holy presence and a crime against those who gather to celebrate that presence.” (Fr. Austin Fleming, p. 32 Preparing for Liturgy: A theology and Spirituality) Because of its crucial role in our journey of faith, the Sacred Liturgy is a public celebration requiring considerable behind-the-scenes preparation if it is to fulfill its function.

Ministry Description
Sacristans prepare the sanctuary, set in place texts, vessels, ready the bread and the wine for the Holy Mass, and make sure that other liturgical ministries are covered. The sacristan has overall responsibility to diligently obtain, arrange, and verify that all elements necessary for the celebration of the Mass are in place before the start of the Mass (GIRM 105a).

At St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic community, the sacristan of the Mass is entrusted with the task of preparing the Sanctuary and Church for Mass.  Preparation includes ensuring the celebration set up is appropriate to the Church season, feast day, or special service.   

Requirements

1. Sacristans must be a registered parishioner of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal
2. Sacristans must be active, practicing, confirmed Catholics at least 18 years of age.
3. Sacristans should have a history of service in the role of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, but it is not necessary
4. Have preliminary knowledge of the Mass and the liturgical year
5. Have current SAFE HAVEN training certification [See Attachment 1]
6. Be a good communicator and maintain good communications with the pastor and other liturgical ministry volunteers.
7. Be flexible, a good organizer, and able to take initiative.
8. Agree to comply with the expectations specified (dress, sign in, timely preparation, substitutions, etc.) to ensure that the all elements necessary for the celebration of Mass are in place.
